If you’ve come to meet someone and you’re not quite sure if the distance between you both qualifies as a long distance relationship, this post is for you.
One thing that everybody can agree on is that when you live in different countries, that’s for sure a long distance relationship. Also, if you live in different states.
Having that said, as a general rule, we can say that a long distance relationship needs to have significant distance between the 2 for it to be long distance.
Don’t get confused by defining a long distance relationship by not being able to see each other’s faces, or not having physical contact.
For example, some might say “I live next door but can’t see him in a regular basis, therefore that’s long distance because I can’t see him” No, that’s not long distance, that’s just a normal relationship with time management problems. Or for instance, someone might say “she lives 15 min away but we only talk through the internet and we don’t see each other physically”, that’s not a long distance relationship, that would be just called a virtual relationship.
This post is all about what makes a relationship long distance from an objective point of view, that everyone wondering if their relationship is a long distance one should know about.
Some people could say that living 1 hour away from the other person feels like a long-distance relationship, specially if in their past relationship his/her partner lived 5 minutes away. But let’s try to give the best objective definition of a long distance relationship.
For a relationship to be categorized as a long distance relationship, there needs to be 2 things:
- A relationship
- A reasonable significant Distance
The 2nd one can be the controversial one and hard to define. So let’s focus on that one.
Wikipedia gives a good definition, it says “a long-distance romantic relationship is an intimate relationship between partners who are geographically separated from one another”.
So if your partner lives next door but you just never see each other, that’s not a long distance relationship.
A reasonable significant distance
A reasonable significant distance is what will determine if it’s long distance or not. This distance needs to be an amount that will make it very hard to travel every day to see each other.
For example, we could say that it can start from 100 miles of distance. Since it’ll take you more or less about 3 hours to get to each other. This makes it significantly more difficult to see each other than most couples. Because it would take you 3 hours to get there, and 3 hours to get back. Which makes a total of 6 hours, and hardly attainable to do in one day constantly.
Since we only have 24 hours in each day, traveling 3 hours every day on the way there, plus 3 on the way back could be considered long distance.
So that a relationship can be considered long distance it needs to be objectively demonstrable that in fact it’s far away. For example, you could say, “she lives 8 hours away in car but I have a helicopter and can get there in 20 minutes.” You would get there faster, but the distance is still the same.
Therefore is a long distance relationship with the perk of having a helicopter to see each other faster, which can make it feel like a normal relationship generally speaking. But there’s a big difference with everybody else, that the vast majority of people don’t have a helicopter.
For you to be able to define a long distance relationship you take in consideration how much contrast it makes with other relationships. So if for example, humanity comes to a point where everybody owns a helicopter as they own a car nowadays, then the amount of distance between 2 people may need to be bigger for that relationship to be considered a long distance one.
Is 50 miles a long distance relationship?
Taking into consideration what was said before. The answer is it depends, if those 50 miles take you about 3 hours to travel it would be considered long distance. If it takes you less time, let’s say 1hr – 1hr and a half, that would mean that she just leaves far away, but it wouldn’t be considered a long distance relationship.
For it to be a long distance relationship it needs to be objectively demonstrable that it’s far away and hard to get to for most people.
So 50 miles wouldn’t really be considered a long distance relationship.
Is 300 miles a long distance relationship?
As previously mentioned, the distance between the 2 people in the relationship needs to be a significant amount for it to be considered a long distance relationship. If you’re wondering if 300 miles is a long distance relationship, the answer is Yes. 300 miles is too much to be traveling on an every day basis, if not impossible to most people. A long distance relationship is when you’re in a significant geographical distance that keeps most people in this situation to be unable to see each other on a regular basis.
Is an hour an a half long distance?
Having a precise definition of what is considered a long distance relationship is very important, and most importantly is that it makes sense. If you travel an hour an a half to see your partner, that’s not considered long distance for the simple reason that you could make that roundtrip in a day on a regular basis if you wanted, since a day has 24 hours. It’s drivable.
For the relationship to be considered a long distance one there needs to be a significant amount of distance between the 2 that would keep most couples unable to see each other on a every day or weekly basis.
Is 30 miles a long-distance relationship?
As I mentioned before, a long distance relationship in order to be consider long distance, it needs to be demonstrable that there’s a significant amount of distance between the 2. If you’re wondering if 30 miles makes your relationship a long-distance relationship, the answer is No. 30 miles is totally drivable within a day. For it to be long distance you would need it to be at least about 100 miles away.
How far away is considered a long distance relationship?
So that a relationship can be considered a long distance relationship there needs to be 2 things:
- A relationship
- A significant amount of distance
A significant amount of distance is when it wouldn’t be a drivable distance for a normal person on an every day basis. This averages to be an amount of 100-125 miles.
Since one day only has 24 hours, if it takes you 3 hours to get there and 3 hours to get back, it would be considered a long distance relationship because the vast majority of people would not be able to make those trips every day.
Is 40 miles too far for a relationship?
When dating someone, it’s nice to have them living close to you, so you can see them more often and without that much effort. Sadly, this is not everyone’s case. If you’re wondering if 40 miles is too far for a relationship, the quick answer is that it depends. If it’s a 1 hour trip that’s not too far, because it’s perfectly drivable within a day.
On the other hand, if you live in a city with lots of traffic and it takes you 2 hours to get there, it’s probably too far, but you could totally still have a relationship.
Is 2 hours considered a long-distance relationship?
Instead of thinking distance wise, you might think time wise if a relationship is a long distance one.
If your girlfriend lives 2 hours away, that wouldn’t be considered a long distance relationship since it’s still drivable within one day. But it’s getting pretty close to be called a long distance relationship. In fact, there are many couples that with traffic, it takes them 2 hours to get there, but they don’t feel it as long if it’s within the city. If it’s in a place they don’t visit, outside of the city, they would perceive it as long distance much more likely.
If she lives 2 hours away, the relationship could be considered a medium long distance relationship.
Is 1 hour a long-distance relationship?
If you’re wondering if your relationship is a long distance one because you live 1 hour away from each other, the answer is No. Being 1 hour apart is not a long distance relationship since it’s a totally drivable distance within a day. For it to be called long distance it would need to be objectively proven that it’s very hard if not impossible to drive those distances within a day, on an everyday basis.
In conclusion, to determine if your relationship is a long distance one, ask yourself the next question ¿Can I travel to see her/him within a day, on an every day basis? If the answer is yes, it’s definitely not a long distance relationship, and if it’s a no, then it’s most likely that it’d be a long distance one.
This post was all about what’s considered a long relationship that everyone wondering if they’re in one should know about.
